Legionnaires started Boy Scout Troop #1 in 1923. Inspired by Legionnaire’s examples, Scouts and Eagle Scouts were some of the first in the United States Armed Forces for World War Two.
World War 1 left many families without a father and head of household.Surviving family members struggled financially and emotionally. Returning veteran did not receive adequate medical care from the federal government.In an effort to address some of these issues, the framework of the AmericanLegion was formed at the Paris Caucus in March of 1919. The US Congress granted a national charter for the American Legion later in that same year.
Bertha B. Mitchell is a Gold Star Mother.Post#201 is named after her deceased son, a World War 1 veteran. She financed the building and was involved in many political and social aspects that helped form San Diego.
The American Legion Post #201 has moved to Lemon Grove, where this light continues to shine.
Lester Olmstead, master builder, constructed the DeWitt C. Mitchell American Legion Post #201 completed on this site in 1931. Olmstead went on to be the City Commissioner for San Diego Zoo.
