Ted Williams is a prominent figure in US history, and San Diego's history. Because he was part of the American Legion and a neighbor in the community he holds a spot in Seated in History. His military history was large. My favorite part is this envelop I fabricated, showing Ted's address as a young man on Utah Street in San Diego. My friend and baseball historian, Bill Swank donated his Ted Williams postage stamp to this display as well as a keepsake he made, the 'Splendid Splinter' was William's nickname and when a remodel occurred in the old Williams home, Bill was lucky to get some tear-outs during a remodel. This splinter of wood came from Ted's childhood home.
The envelope has oddities; a US postage stamp is only made after a person dies, and so it could never have been delivered to Ted as a youngster. The return address is from the developer, Wakeland Housing, which includes the contemporary zip code. I had to recreate a typewriter font on my computer. All this to say, scrutinize everything you see!
, "Baseball in San Diego History". Bill Swank. He has written many books as well as being Santa at Balboa Park.
There has been some controversy about whether Ted actually played for the #201. This is my research (evidence) and of course that he would have been a neighborhood boy seeking a game. He had also played for other American Legion Halls (like the 370) as other research showed, but at that time, young athletes would play lots of places and games in order to be seen.
