Recipe for Friendship in Amici Park, Little Italy San Diego
Recipe for Friendship is a public art commission for Little Italy, San Diego, in Amici Park on the corner of Date and State Streets.
Recipe for Friendship celebrates food- the making and sharing of it. Its based on what's common to all migration and ethnicities - we all bring tastes that are familiar to us the the new places. It's the first step in introducing one's culture and sharing- becoming friends.
The art piece consists of ten sidewalk plaques and four cafe-like tables. The first sidewalk plaque is located at the corner of India and Date Streets. Following the plaques along the sidewalk on the north side of Date street draws you from the hum of restaurants on India to Amici Park across from the church. On each of the tables is a bronze sculpture- a plate of food with tis recipe engraved on the napkin. Do a rubbing and take home the recipe.
Judith Christensen co-taught with me to research and make books about fava beans, garlic and squash at the Washington Elementary School as part of this project. One copy of the book we all made remains in the school's library.
