COMM22 Commercial and 22nd San Diego, CA 2015 I was the arts administrator as well as one of the artists. Mario Chacon created the two sided 30’ long mural on the neighborhood side of this housing complex entitled “Flowers for My Loved Ones”. The de la Torre bothers ( Einar and Jamex) created the ComTron2000 sculpture on the trolley side of the complex, a 16’ tall robot with Mayan like carved panels showing contemporary scenes. I made a walking poem and bench set for the front and side sidewalks. I was also involved in the Paseo Gallery, which is designed specifically for the residents. In the high foot traveled area on Commercial, a pedestrian will notice pavers in the sidewalk with words that cause that walker to think. One will also see benches augmented with graphic designs that link to the surrounding and to the pavers. Hence sitters are thinkers as well. The words and images in juxtaposition are like a walking poem. In the sprit of community involvement, options for both the words and graphics were given to the neighbors. This voting was done on a Facebook interface (as well as old works paper). In this way everyone who participated in the voting can feel a direct connection to this piece and their neighborhood. Combinations like: Panorama/Smile, Just passing through/ Wish you were here, Serenidad/ Respirando, Entrada/ Generosity. There are 26 such combination.
