The Question is, What is going on here"?
Art Produce, San Diego 2000

“The Question is, What is Going on Here” Title and intent to explain the oddness of a grocery turning into an art space. Lynn Susholtz bought a broken space in a broken neighborhood in 2000. I did the first exhibition there using the large glass windows as the exhibit that could be seen 24 hours a day and right on the bus line. There were three smaller windows that were fitted for video and sound. I wanted the neighbors to know what was coming. There was a plan model so the inside space could be understood without entry. A video of a fly that made a the sound of a bus. Three dimensional still lifes that had a mirror image thing going that sort of made you want to rub your eyes. I bought 3 doll house chandeliers and lighted them up in a row, night was the best viewing. A red artificial cardinal bird. There was a large wooden table with a perspective that was totally off. One could never dine on it, but somehow it was believable.

Fast forward 25 years and I just attended the 25th Anniversary of Art Produce. There were so many Public Address meetings held there, well meetings of all kinds, like the foundation of doing things, one needs a place to gather and brew up ideas. Lynn has a residency program, a studio, a gallery, an amazing garden and lots of art classes. There is a restaurant. The neighborhood has grown up around the building. Its more like Lynn guided the infill of boutiques and great food. Anne Mudge made a lovely public art piece right by the 805 ramp on University Ave (around 30th Street).
Lynn is an enabler of the best kind!
