Nina's Personal Reconstruction of the Celestial Mythological Art Project
Nina talks about the stars and mythology (Oct 5 2024 I want to do a talk about mythology with great authority but the only authority I have is that I am Greek, oh and I’m a Sagittarius and thats what’s up in the sky now. As a newbie, I can find it because its part of the MilkyWay. Nov22 to Dec 21. The story has it that the centaur, half man and half horse is holding a bow and arrow and pointing towards Scorpius. The Centaur is named Chiron who was known for his wisdom, healing skills and compassion, also his ability to keep his animal half under control.
Hercules accidentally killed his friend Chiron with a poison arrow while hunting. Being the son of Cronus, Chiron was immortal and could not die. Full of sorrow and guilt, Heracles vowed to help Chiron from an eternity of misery without being able to exit. He made a deal with Zeus. Chiron would take the place of Prometheus who Zeus was punishing for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans. He was tied to a rock from where he couldn’t be freed unless someone else too his place, where upon an eagle was to eat his liver over and over again. These plots get complicated, so hang with me. Chiron swapped places with Prometheus who was set free. Zeus allows Chiron to die and placed his image among the stars as reward of his noble character.
So it wasn’t only Greeks who had nothing else to do but come up with wacky stories drinking ouzo, no there was the Islamic book of Fixed Stars, 10th century AD with stories along the lines of the Greeks. Renaissance Star Charts (1603) also showing elaborate drawings of the Centaur
And closer to home, Native American mythology featured animals, and sacred birds important to the tribe. Cahuilla stories include constellations tied to mountain sheep and other animals vital to their survival.
So then I notice some odd constellations in the Southern Hemisphere. Turns out that area came to naming later in the game and named their new technologies, like, Microscopium, and Telescopium.
This all got me thinking about creating my own. You know I’m an artist, right? Well their drawings looked off to me, like the stars weren’t at joints in the body, but more random. Middle of the shin type of thing. This gave me lots of leeway visually.
The first image is the way we would have learned it in school.
The second image is the things important in Nina’s life. My constellations include (not in order of importance) My dog Xoco, my guy Ralf, my cellphone, my three headed mother cluster, and my website where you will find lots more information about my art. (Hahaha)
A great evening was had!
Two photos, one of the set up with an attachment to the Dobsonian to connect to a tablet. First night!
The telescope was set up pointing to Hot Springs Mountain, and the image that came from that shot.
