This is a series of vases that I made from glass bottles, cut and engraved and extra cork flooring. I wanted a ledge that a person could put something on to enhance or compliment the ‘floral arrangement’. I personally have used seed pods, butterfly wings and stones. My florals in the chaparral are different than city flowers. Dry can be beautiful especially when singled out. Plant structure can be admired when there is one rather than a grouping. I engraved vertical lines and random square shapes connecting some lines. I was seeking a pattern that could be consistent in the series yet stretched to accommodate varied forms of bottles, gin to vitamins.
I cut the bottles on a tile saw with a glass blade (impregnated with diamonds, not teeth). I ground down the sharp edges with a mechanical tool also with diamond impregnated discs and then with a hand held sanding pad. The flooring is cork, left over from an unfortunate experience with Lumber Liquidators un-installable product. It is easy to cut the flooring with a bandsaw. Sanded the edges with a standing belt sander. It was easier to cut another circle and glue it under the top cap than any other way I tried. Once the glue dried, I drilled the hole that allows the flower to go through and reach the water inside the glass.
