I chose copper because it would make it's own patina, the green crusty surface that happens when it is exposed to the elements. It replaces the shinny newness. It reminds me of when people age. They are no longer the new penny, but rather a complex gathering of the bumps and dings of life. Each color cluster represents aspects endured, and times of joy. The wofen motif follows along the same line. A life lived is like a beautiful basket. The weathering shows age, integrity and fortitude. The symbolism was better than a naturalistic figure with a grandchild. I love the idea that each day the gate will be handled. That everything will settle in and age together.
In the evening, the lanterns and planter surround light softly with LED lights powered from solar panels. Here, the light falls on a ceramic piece hand colored to match other tile on the architecture. |
