"A
RECIPE FOR FRIENDSHIP" CALIFORNIA
ARTS DAY SAN DIEGO, DOWNTOWN- All the ingredients are in place for a public art dedication ceremony to be held at Amici Park in Little Italy, San Diego, on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.. Entitled "A Recipe For Friendship," this new sculpture is by artist Nina Karavasiles and was commissioned by the City of San Diego Commission For Arts and Culture (Commission). The Commission and the Little Italy Association invite civic and community leaders, as well as the public, to take part in this dedication ceremony celebrating this exciting new public display. This date also happens to coincide with California Arts Day, a state-wide event celebrating the enrichment art brings to people's lives. "A Recipe For Friendship" is a multi-part sculpture based on the topic of food. Familiar recipes were the things most dear to a person moving to a foreign land. Beginning on the corner of India and Date St. and continuing up Date St. to Amici Park, 10 sidewalk plaques have been embedded into the ground each with a saying about food. At Amici Park, the viewer will find 4 freestanding bronze representations of particular meals with their recipes. The engraved text of each recipe plaque allows the viewer to take a rubbing, so they may take a copy home with them. These recipes will be on top of a small representation of a table. Red and white glass mosaics will lend the appearance of a checkered tablecloth. On Wednesday, October 10, 2001 beginning at 11:00 a.m. guests arriving to the ceremony will be entertained by local performers and will sample some delicious snacks courtesy of the famous restaurants of Little Italy. At 11:30, a brief ceremony will take place, featuring speeches by civic and community leaders. Following this, the public will be invited to explore "A Recipe For Friendship." Materials for rubbings will be provided so the public may take recipes home. This dedication ceremony will be a perfect opportunity to educate the public about California Arts Day and to showcase one of San Diego's finest neighborhoods.. All interested media parties are encouraged to RSVP to Edward K. Wilensky no later than October 7, 2001 at (619) 233-3898 or by email at lilitaly@cts.com.
